The Gun Flint Trail

Image
So only Chad and I would carefully plan our future by selling our house, quiting our jobs, taking a year off to travel just to get thrown in a pandemic!  But there is not much any of us can do about it, the world is crazy right now.  So for the few people here that aren't my children - Chad and I were at Darien's riding out COVID when my old boss called and asked if I wanted my old job back.  I wasn't really sure what to do.  The one thing I know for sure is that our traveling is not done by a long shot and I didn't really want to be stuck in the same old grind.  So after much debate, I took my old job and am back at the same old grind. Not being sure what was going to happen with the fallout from the pandemic, I figured, it might be a good thing to have a stable job until all this crap blows over. So the Not the middle of Minnesota blog is coming to you from the middle of Minnesota.  Last week Chad and I went camping on the Gun Flint Trail.  This has been one of our fa

Corona sucks!

Goodbye Texas! Corona stole you from me.  Oh the things we were going to do.  The antiquing, the vineyards, the hiking.  I will be back I promise. As I type this we are parked at a truck stop in the southern part of Oklahoma, this will be where we spend the night.  We choose to leave Texas early.  Minnesota is going on lock down on Friday.  Chad and I debated on whether we wanted to weather the storm and just stay at the rv park and keep practicing our social distancing or come home.  The one thing we both agree on is that if the crap hits the fan, one of us gets sick, one of our parents gets sick, we do not want to be 1400 miles away.  So about 3 p.m. we left for home.  Lets hope it's an uneventful ride. See you soon.

The Alamo, not what I expected

Darien, Jon and the boys made it to Texas although we did get to do a few things everything was cut short.  But at least we got to spend time with them and the boys and that is what matters.   We went to the Alamo.  I am just going to say it....I wasn't real impressed with the Alamo.  The history of what happened there is  unbelievable but I think I made it out to be more in my head.  I thought there would be a museum with period pieces to view.  They were working on restoring some areas so some of it was closed to the public.  But I  did love the gardens and grounds.  Your not allowed to take pictures inside so that is all I have is outside pics. This is his cheese smile. Just down the block from the Alamo is the River Walk.  There is a mall, shops and restaurants.  We grabbed a bite to eat and walked.  The boys wanted to go swimming. Some of my pics are a little blurry but it was really bright out and honestly I couldn&#

The Cowboy Capital of the World

Our campground is a mile or two out of the town of Bandera.  We really didn't set out to find this place, I just called around until I found an RV Park that had an opening for the month of March and it was the first reasonably priced one I could find but I am super glad fate led us here.  I looked up the population and I think it said that Bandera has a population of 800 something but it feels way bigger.  There are tons of little shops, restaurants and bars.  The city actually puts out a weekly calendar of things going on around town.   My favorite place down town is called The General Store.  They have a little bit of everything from boots to little souvenirs.  In the front of it they have a fully working 1950's ice cream fountain and its decorated with antiques.   The courthouse. This is the Chamber of Commerce. Old historical building. An oldie parked in front of the Old Spanish Trail restaurant.
